MAHARASHTRA

Maharashtra, a state spanning west-central India, is one of the wealthiest and the most developed states in India. One of the more prominent physical features of Maharashtra is the Deccan plateau, which is separated from the Konkan coastline by “Ghats”. Most of the famous hill stations of the state are at the Ghats, Lonavala, Khandala, Matheran being amongst the most popular ones. It offers a perfect weekend getaway to tourists from all over.

However this rich state is best known for its fast-paced capital, Mumbai (formerly Bombay). This sprawling metropolis is the seat of the Bollywood film industry. It’s also famous for its much talked about monument- The British Raj-era Gateway of India and the cave temples at nearby Elephanta Island.

In the Western Ghats better known as Sahyadri is Kalsubai. a peak near Nashik city which is the highest elevated point in Maharashtra. A natural abode for travellers, Alibag is another small seaside town on the Konkan coast, and a perfect holiday spot for tourists. To the south is its temple town of Ganpatipule.

The state has several tourist destinations, one such is Aurangabad – rich in heritage and culture especially very popular with the foreign tourists for it magnificent sculptures of Allora and Ajanta which are named World Heritage Sites. Other is the popular Hindu places of pilgrimage, the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara at Nanded and the Sai Baba shrine at Shirdi that attract pilgrims from all parts of India and beyond.
