Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a state in the northern part of India crossed by the Himalayas and known for its natural beauty. The state is divided into two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon. The interim capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun, the largest city in the region, which is a railhead.
The Garhwal region is predominantly known for its Hindu pilgrimage sites Rishikesh and Haridwar. The city hosts the evening Ganga Aarti, a spiritual gathering on the sacred Ganges River every day. This Abode of God includes many shrines and places of pilgrimage – Chardham the most sacred and revered Hindu temples Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath are nestled in the mighty mountains and is a “yatra” taken by millions of Indian every year.
In contrast is the Kumaon region that offers some of the most stunning mountain scenery that we know of anywhere. It is a very popular tourist destination for its world’s highest mountain range and a charming holiday hill station Nainital set around a small lake, is a picturesque destination, Rich and varied wildlife of Jim Corbett National Park which shelters Bengal tigers and other native wildlife, also boasts for its scenic charm and magnificent views, makes it one of the most favourite holiday spots.
